Did Sirius know what Regulus did to Voldemort's locket?

Yeah, it seems like he didn't know what the locket was for or the significance of it. I believe during the fifth book while they were cleaning out Sirius's house they all tired opening the locket but failed. Who knows what goes on after death (in real life in the fictional world of Harry Potter), may be he found out then.
