How Can I attach music to an email?

I have the music on my downloads. I did a test run and attached one and emailed it to myself but when I tried to play it, my windows media player wouldnt play it. Its on my computer so why wouldnt it work. How do I know that it would work if I sent it to someone else? I sent it both ways: wav and mp3.
